On Thursday, December 20, 2024, Dr. Chris Frey of North Carolina State University attended the White House Sustainable Chemistry Strategic Plan Launch Event, held at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The event brought together Administration officials, legislative representation, and individuals from academia, public, and industry.

The event recognized the release of the Federal Sustainable Chemistry Strategic Plan and support for Sustainable Chemistry expressed by leaders from government, academia, and industry.
Sustainable chemistry is “the chemistry that produces compounds or materials from building blocks, reagents, and catalysts that are readily-available and renewable, operates at optimal efficiency, and employs renewable energy sources; this includes the intentional design, manufacture, use, and end-of-life management of chemicals, materials, and products across their lifecycle that do not adversely impact human health and the environment, while promoting circularity, meeting societal needs, contributing to economic resilience, and aspiring to perpetually use elements, compounds, and materials without depletion of resources or accumulation of waste.”
The Federal Sustainable Chemistry Strategic Plan and the preceding report on Sustainable Chemistry Report: Framing the Federal Landscape were developed under the auspices of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Committee on the Environment, which was co-chaired by Dr. Frey from 2022 to 2024 while he was Assistant Administrator of the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
