Leadership Roles

Federal and International Advisory and Science Leadership:

Throughout his career, Dr. Frey has served in numerous high-profile advisory positions. He was the Co-Chair of the Committee on the Environment of the National Science and Technology Council of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). As Chair of the EPA’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC), he provided scientific advice on all six pollutants regulated under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), including influential work especially related to ground level ozone and particulate matter. He took a principled stand in leading the Independent Particulate Matter Review Panel after the official EPA CASAC Particulate Matter Review Panel was dismissed by a political appointee. The subsequent publication on the need for stricter standards in the New England Journal of Medicine exemplifies his deep commitment to objective, evidence-based decision-making. He has additionally had advisory roles with the EPA Science Advisory Board, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the World Health Organization, and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
